Hiriyur in Chitradurga District, presently in the Diocese of Shimoga, is a town surrounded by Iron- ore factory and sugar cane factory. It consists of a population of 30,000 of whom nearly 50% were steeped in illiteracy and ignorance. His Grace Archbishop Arokiaswamy of Bangalore had pleaded in the CRI meeting requesting various Congregations to take up this project but in vain. Finally we were, so to say compelled, to take up this project, and heeded to the call of the Lord on 1st June 1976. They were first accommodated in a rented house on Water Works Road. They were to take up teaching in the existing school up to IV standard with 95 students on its roll. After the arrival of the sisters, there was gradual increase in the strength of students. As the Parish was not in favor of constructing a High school we had to do so by ourselves to meet the crying needs of the students at a small distance from the Parish Church. We are glad to note that lately the Parish had also upgraded its primary school into a High School. Our High School is known as St. Anne’s High School while the Parish School is known as Assumption School. In both of these institutions our sisters are rendering their service.
